Top 8 things to do in Gloucester this spring
As the weather starts to warm up and the Easter holidays loom, you might be looking for some fresh ideas for family days out in Gloucester. Here’s our pick of the top things to do in Gloucester this spring.
Walk amongst the snowdrops
Colesbourne Park is known for having one of England’s finest snowdrop gardens. Throughout February and March, they have open days where you can walk through the snowdrop fields and enjoy these beautiful flowers in their first bloom.
Spring strolls
If you want to get back to nature without even leaving the city, visit Robinswood Hill Country Park. With over 250 acres to explore including beautiful viewpoints across the city as well as the Malvern Hills and Black Mountains, it’s the perfect place for country walks. If you’re lucky you might even spot some of the badgers, foxes and red kites that call this place home.
Perfect for a rainy day
Slimbridge Wetland Centre is a half an hour drive from Gloucester but is well worth a visit. This 2000-acre wetland reserve is home to otters, voles, ducks and even flamingos. Even on a rainy day, children can enjoy splashing around in the outdoor Welly Boot play area.
Visit Hogwarts
For the movie buffs out there, a visit to Gloucester Cathedral is a must. As you walk along the cloisters, you might think you’ve stumbled into Hogwarts. They doubled as Harry Potter’s school in three of the popular films and have also featured in Doctor Who and Wolf Hall. The tomb of Edward II is also housed in the cathedral and is one of the few monarch’s tombs outside of London.
A bit of retail therapy
If hitting the shops is your idea of a good day out, head to Gloucester Quays. This factory outlet has something for everyone from the Cadbury Factory shop to M&S and Next. There are also plenty of restaurants to tickle your taste buds so you can make a whole day of it.
Beer lovers assemble
From Friday 30 March to Sunday April 1, Gloucester Docks will be taken over by a craft sausage and beer festival. Over 50 beers and ciders as well as burgers and sausages from Over Farm Market will be there for you to sample. Ideal for those who love beer and for those looking to try something new.
